Translating and Interpreting the Tractatus

This book examines issues raised in translating and interpreting Wittgenstein's Tractatus . The first part contains chapters on the English translations, focusing on the principles followed and their application in particular cases. The second part consists of case studies of selected translations into languages other than English, telling the story of what translations have been done, giving examples of the interpretive claims involved in the translation decisions, and discussing some of the ensuing debates. The aim is thus threefold: to reflect on the principles of translation that have informed the translations of the Tractatus , to examine certain questions of interpretation through the lens of translation, and to consider some of the characteristic issues that have arisen. The book thereby seeks to raise the profile of philosophical translation, demonstrating how important translation is for philosophical thinking and scholarship. Translating and Interpreting the Tractatus is essential reading for all scholars and advanced students of Wittgentein’s work. It is also ideal for anyone interested in philosophical translation.
