Produktbeschreibung

Virginia Woolf and Italian Readers: 1926-2026 is the first comprehensive study of Virginia Woolf’s cultural journey in Italy across a century of translation, editorial history, artistic remediation, and digital reception. The aim of the book is to chart how readers’ perception of Woolf continually evolved, deconstructing her changing images from an edulcorated modernist under Fascism to a foundational “mother of thought” for second-wave feminism, up to her status as a vibrant contemporary icon. Expanding traditional scholarship and addressing methodological challenges through a renewed critical lens, the volume identifies five distinct waves of reception, employing an archive-based, interdisciplinary approach that integrates reception aesthetics, periodical studies, material publishing history, digital humanities, and the sociology of translation. This inquiry is further enriched by interviews with contemporary Italian translators, editors and publishers of Woolf’s work, alongside an account of the creation and scope of the open-access ItalianWoolf database. Key themes explored in the book include a focus on the censorship mechanisms put in place during Fascism and how Woolf’s translators challenged them; the relationship between Leonard Woolf, The Hogarth Press and Italian translators and publishers; the circulation of Woolf’s works during post-war Neorealism and her subsequent institutionalisation within Italian high school anthologies and prestigious editorial series; Woolf’s pivotal role in 1970s Italian feminist theory and her presence across radio and television; and finally the impact of transmedial, artistic, and pop remediations since the late 1990s in consolidating Woolf as a cultural icon in Italy.
