Dieser Pauly Supplementband erschließt die Religionen der griechisch-römischen Welt in 86 Artikeln auf Englisch und Deutsch, von Ahnen und Askese bis hin zu Wissen und Witwen . Die Beiträge konzentrieren sich auf die Verwendung religiöser Handlungen oder Bedeutungen durch antike Akteure in einer Vielzahl von Bereichen und Situationen sozialer Interaktion. Sie beschreiben in der Verbindung von enzyklopädischer Information und essayistischem Überblick, wie Menschen der antiken Mittelmeerwelt Religion routinemäßig, unbewusst oder bewusst, außergewöhnlich oder strategisch einsetzten. Antike Religion wird in diesem Band als „gelebte Religion“ dargestellt, als „Antike Religion im Kontext “. This volume is groundbreaking in that: a) it surveys religious practices, agents, objects and institutions from all over the ancient Mediterranean, b) it covers a huge chronological span from the Archaic Era to the Imperial Roman world and beyond (ca. from 400 BCE to 400 CE); and, finally, c) it foregrounds the complexities of ‘religion’ as a field of both social action and research. In essence, Ancient Religion in Context raises awareness of the impact of our own cultural references in the ways we approach, and even define, ‘religion’, and the involvement of own preconceptions in the very process of setting boundaries between the sacred and the secular. More significantly, the volume adopts a bottom-up approach laying emphasis on the socio-political, cultural and economic agents (organic or inorganic, people, animals, plants and objects), and the contexts that make up what we think of as religion.
