Materiality and Memory in the Works of Josef Winkler

The first English-language monograph on Josef Winkler, this book examines how material objects shape memory, identity, and cultural experience in the work of one of Austria's most celebrated contemporary writers. Josef Winkler is one of Austria's most acclaimed and provocative contemporary writers. His works confront death, religion, sexuality, memory, and social marginality with an intensity that has earned him major literary awards and a distinguished place in German-language literature. Yet despite his international reputation, Winkler has received little sustained attention in the English-speaking world. This volume is the first book-length study of his work in English. William Christopher Burwick examines the central role of material objects in Winkler's writing. Religious artifacts, tools, consumer goods, brands, and everyday possessions emerge not as background details but as carriers of memory and meaning, linking individual experience to broader questions of history, belief, economics, masculinity, and cultural identity. Through close readings of Winkler's fiction, autobiographical writings, and travel narratives, Burwick offers both an accessible introduction to a major Austrian author and a new perspective on the relationship between literature, memory, and material culture.
