The Sputnik Effect in Global Perspective

This book examines the scientific and technological competition that existed between the Soviet Union and the United States after the launch of Sputnik I in 1957. While much research has focused on the short-term consequences of the ‘Sputnik effect’ in the USA, this book explores its impact on a global scale, demonstrating how it forged both short- and long-term connections across the globe. Together, the chapters demonstrate that the launch of Sputnik 1 had direct and indirect effects around the world. In some cases, it was crucial in accelerating processes already underway, while in other cases, it modified strategies and visions of the future. The first three essays seek to refine our understanding of Sputnik’s impact in the USA, emphasising its international dimension and multifaceted consequences. The next three essays delves into the consequences for Western Europe, particularly in the acceleration of the European integration process. A third group of essays focuses on the USSR and Eastern Europe, exploring the expectations Sputnik created for the socialist world, and the international connections it fostered. The last essays explore how competition between Soviet and US science and technology also impacted the global reputation of the two super-powers in Africa and Asia during a period of decolonisation.
