Art, Architecture, and the Decoration of Rome’s Churches

For decades, the art historian Dr. Michael Erwee has been researching and publishing on the furnishings of Rome’s churches. His findings are being presented in a definitive four-volume series. Each volume describes the various furnishings often reattributing or redating items based on newly discovered archival material and features large-format illustrations of all major artworks. Visualizations of the church interiors, including their altars, paintings, funerary monuments, and decorative elements, allow the reader to fully grasp the architecture and experience each work of art anew. Spanning approximately 500 pages and featuring 580 illustrations, this first volume covers Rome’s seven pilgrim churches: Santa Croce in Gerusalemme; San Giovanni in Laterano (including the baptistery and the Holy Stairs); San Lorenzo fuori le mura; Santa Maria Maggiore; San Paolo fuori le mura; San Pietro in Vaticano; and San Sebastiano fuori le mura.
