This book is divided into two parts. The first, A Summary of Optics , covers the evolution of optical science from Greek studies of vision to Latin Europe, Kepler's theories, and the groundbreaking work of Newton and Huygens. It traces the development of 17th-century light theories, explores the discovery of diffraction, and highlights the first astronomical measurement of light speed. Newton's influence dominates the 18th century, with significant advancements in chromatic aberration and wave theory. Chapter 5 delves into the wave-based explanations of diffraction and interference, featuring Young, Biot, Arago, and Fresnel’s contributions. Chapter 6 focuses on Fresnel’s work, which provided a solid wave theory framework. The final section in this part reviews key measurements of light speed and the ether-drift experiment in pre-relativistic physics. The second part, A Brief History of Acoustics , traces the development of sound theory from ancient Greece to the early 20th century. Chapter 8 covers the emergence of acoustics as a scientific field, discussing the vibrating string problem, the Superposition Principle, and Fourier series. It also examines Helmholtz's physiological acoustics and concludes with the impact of electromechanical advances on the field.
