Les Empires berbères: constructions et déconstructions d'un objet historiographique

Cet ouvrage se propose de confronter les sources arabes médiévales et modernes relatives aux Empires berbères (XIe-XIIIe siècles) avec la manière dont les études européennes ont appréhendé cette thématique en fonction d’un contexte qui vit l’émergence de l’orientalisme et l’expansion de la France au Maghreb. En effet, l'invocation puis l'étude des Empires berbères servit à caractériser un grand Autre de proximité : le Maghreb à la fois si proche et pourtant si différent. Étudier ce passé revenait donc à donner des perspectives à cette différence radicale. Dans le cadre du Maghreb colonisé puis nouvellement indépendant, ce passé pourtant lointain ne cessa plus de servir de référence et d’être inséré à un roman national qui ambitionnait de donner une assise solide à ces États.
This work compares medieval and modern Arabic sources relating to the Berber Empires (11th-13th centuries) with the way in which European studies have apprehended this topic against the backdrop of the emergence of orientalism and the expansion of France in the Maghreb. Indeed, the invocation and then the study of the Berber Empires served to characterize a great Other of proximity : the Maghreb at once so close and yet so different. Studying this past therefore amounted to giving perspectives to this radical difference. In the context of the colonized and then newly independent Maghreb, this yet distant past never ceased to serve as a reference and as a framework for a "roman national" which aimed to give these States a solid foundation.
