Abstract Intercultural communication is still dominated by the technique of comparing typologies in a bipolar fashion. However, in times of increasing globalisation, this approach is insufficient. This book interconnects the concepts of values, communication and culture, and in doing so develops an innovative approach to examining current social developments in detail. It presents new models and approaches which are based on the notion of thinking in terms of ‘not only but also’. It proceeds by discussing de-Westernisation based on a critical synopsis of approaches applied by Asian (primarily Chinese) communication experts, and exploring and identifying this subject’s potential for further development. In the book’s empirical section, the author analyses current values and processes of cultural change in the People’s Republic of China in order to gain a deeper understanding of the country’s dominant cultural values.
