Brasilianische Belle Epoque

Die Internationale Moderne außerhalb Europas wurde in der Geschichte der Fotografie bisher selten berücksichtigt. So ist kaum bekannt, dass Brasilien seit den 1830er Jahren eine herausragende Rolle in der Fotografie einnahm und ein bemerkenswertes Repertoire an Techniken, Diskursen und individueller Formensprache entwickelte. Auf der Basis intensiver Archivarbeit und ausgehend von dem Fotografen Valério Vieira rekonstruiert Alina Hofmann den ästhetisch-kulturellen Kontext der Fotografie der ‚brasilianischen Belle Époque’. Sie geht der Frage nach, was ein fotografisches Bild um 1900 leisten konnte oder sollte. Vieira fand darauf humorvolle wie kritische Antworten. Seine Fotografien vermitteln ein umfassenderes Bild der Jahrhundertwende als bisher in der Forschung beachtet. International modernism outside Europe has rarely been considered in the history of photography. It is not very well-known, for example, that Brazil played a prominent role in photography from the 1830s onwards and developed an outstanding repertoire of techniques, discourses and individual formal languages. Based on intensive archival work and starting out from the photographer Valério Vieira, Alina Hofmann reconstructs the aesthetic and cultural context of photography in the “Brazilian Belle Époque”. She explores the question of what could or should have been achieved by photographic images around 1900. Vieira found humorous and critical answers to this question.
