Produktbeschreibung

This book addresses a growing global concern: the accumulation of heavy metals in soil, water, and other environmental compartments due to anthropogenic activities such as industrial discharge, mining, urban wastewater mismanagement, excessive use of agrochemicals, and atmospheric deposition. Heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), and mercury (Hg) are persistent, non-biodegradable pollutants that pose severe threats to ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health through direct exposure and bioaccumulation in the food chain. The primary aim of this book is to develop and assess sustainable, eco-friendly bioremediation strategies that reduce the mobility and ecological toxicity of heavy metals in contaminated environments. Rather than relying solely on energy-intensive or chemically aggressive remediation techniques, this work explores organic and biologically mediated approaches that are safer, cost-effective, and environmentally harmonious. By focusing on the synergistic use of biochar, compost, dry-based organic amendments, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), this project proposes an innovative framework for restoring heavy metal-contaminated soils and improving the ecological function of degraded land. The outcomes contribute to both environmental restoration and risk reduction across multiple systems-terrestrial, aquatic, and agro-ecological. The proposed interventions in the book are economically viable and socially acceptable, suitable for widespread use in both industrialized and developing regions. The findings have implications for policy frameworks related to land restoration, environmental pollution control, and wastewater reuse. This work contributes to the field of environmental science by offering integrated bioremediation strategies that address the pressing challenge of heavy metal pollution in a sustainable and ecologically sound manner. The outcomes offer a blueprint for restoring contaminated environments, mitigating human health risks, and supporting the long-term ecological balance of soils and waters. As global pressures on land and water resources intensify, such interdisciplinary solutions are essential for future environmental resilience.
