Coastal and Marine Disasters in South Asia

Climate change, combined with rapid population growth, exerts immense pressure on coastal and marine across the world especially in South Asia. This dual threat endangers not only communities but also critical infrastructure. Rising sea levels make the reliance on man-made coastal defenses increasingly untenable. The costs of construction and maintenance are high, and such structures can harm natural habitats—jeopardizing the livelihoods of those who depend on marine and coastal resources. The challenge is further exacerbated by the growing frequency and severity of natural disasters in coastal regions. This book embraces a comprehensive, and interdisciplinary approach to address coastal and marine disasters in South Asia using modern tools like remote sensing, multi-decadal GIS modeling, and hotspots mapping to achieve sustainable development goals through regional planning.
