Alte menschliche Körper werden in unserer visuellen Umwelt keineswegs tabuisiert. Vor allem in Fotografien sind sie präsent. Bekannte Bildformeln aus Porträt-, Akt- oder Lebenstreppen-Darstellungen finden sich darin wieder. Diese neue Sichtbarkeit des Alters wirkt sich auch auf die Vorstellungen von Sexualmoral, Großelternschaft, Generationenverhältnissen und Lebensläufen aus. Sabine Kampmann untersucht den Bedeutungswechsel, den die Bilder des Alterns erfahren haben, und zeigt, wie die Fotografie unsere Auffassungen vom Altern beeinflusst. Sie stellt Werke von Giorgione, Lucas Cranach und Bernardo Strozzi ebenso wie von Nicholas Nixon, Annegret Soltau, Miwa Yanagi, Andres Serrano, Erwin Olaf, Roman Opalka und Melanie Manchot vor.
Depictions of aged human bodies have become ever more present in the visual arts, particularly in photography. Sabine Kampmann draws out the role of established formulas of portraiture and the conventional nude in this new visibility of old age. She interrogates the images for evidence of changes in the relationship between generations, in attitudes towards sexuality and in the meaning of grandparenthood in society. The author carefully traces an evolution in the depiction of old age in visual culture and impressively extracts the impact that photography has had on changing attitudes towards the later stages of life.
