The Economic Potential of South-South Trade

This book examines how financial systems, institutions, and regional trade agreements interact to shape trade and drive economic growth within the Global South. With a particular focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, it explores the historical and structural reasons for economic stagnation within the region and highlights the fragility of North-South trade, which was seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. South-South trade, which promotes shared development and greater economic resilience, is proposed as an effective strategy for combating the issues associated with North-South trade. Financial development, strengthening of institutions, and the creation of regional trade agreements are shown to be the foundations for sustained economic growth. The analysis extends beyond conventional trade theory to address the digital and environmental forces reshaping the field, including the role of fintech and e-commerce, the emerging pressures of climate vulnerability, and carbon border measures. Drawing on rigorous empirical analysis, the book offers a fresh, Global South-centered perspective on international trade and concludes with policy frameworks for navigating an evolving global economic order. It will be of interest to students, researchers, and policymakers working in development economics, international trade, and regional integration.
