Konkurrenz aus dem Kloster

Pharmazeutische Berufstätigkeit war für Frauen in der Frühen Neuzeit eng mit vorherrschenden Rollenbildern verknüpft: Während für weltliche Frauen das Ideal der Hausfrau und Mutter einer Berufstätigkeit entgegenstand, erlaubte das Rollenbild geistlich lebender Frauen eine Tätigkeit als Klosterapothekerin. Anhand des Lebens und Wirkens der Ordensfrau und Apothekerin Barbara Wild (1747–1815) geht die Autorin zentralen Fragen nach der Lebensrealität von Klosterapothekerinnen in der Frühen Neuzeit nach. Damit leistet sie einen innovativen Beitrag zur Pharmazie- und Ordensgeschichte sowie zur biographischen Geschlechterforschung.
Convent apothecaries were among the few women in the 18th century who did not have to remain housewives but were able to pursue a profession. Using the example of Barbara Wild (1747–1815), the author explores the lived realities of convent apothecaries in the early modern period. She examines the conditions that enabled their professional activity, the conflicts between civic pharmacists and convent apothecaries, as well as their role in healthcare. In doing so, she makes an innovative contribution to gender studies as well as to the history of science and professions.
