Produktbeschreibung

This application-oriented book introduces the associations and relationships between contact mechanics and friction, enabling a deeper understanding of tribology. It deals with the related phenomena of contact, adhesion, capillary forces, friction, lubrication, and wear from one consistent point of view. The author presents (1) methods for rough estimation of tribological quantities, (2) simple and general methods for analytical calculations, and (3) the transition to numerical simulation methods. Through these approaches, the book conveys a coherent view of tribological processes across a wide range of scales, from nanotribology to geophysical applications. System-dynamic aspects of tribological systems, such as squeal, friction-induced instabilities, and pattern formation, are also discussed. The book contains numerous problems and worked solutions, giving readers the opportunity to apply the theory to practical situations and deepen their understanding of the material. The third edition has been revised and expanded with additional material on rough-surface contact mechanics. The chapters on contact mechanics have been extended and reorganized, including additional sections on superposition methods, dimensionality reduction, and two-dimensional (plane-strain) contact mechanics, as well as numerous new examples and exercises, further strengthening the book both as an introduction and as a reference work. Further additions include applications of the superposition principle to inclined indenters, receding contact, energy dissipation due to adhesion, and adhesive impact phenomena.
