Fernanda Pivano and the Translation of American Counterculture

This book offers the first comprehensive reassessment of Fernanda Pivano's role in the literary and cultural exchange between the United States and Italy after World War II. Drawing on previously unexplored archival materials from both countries, it traces her trajectory from her early postwar translations to the landmark Beat anthologies Poesia degli ultimi americani (1964) and Jukebox all'idrogeno (1965), and on through four decades as Italy's foremost interpreter of American counterculture. The study examines a persistent tension in Pivano's career. Despite her prominence as one of the most recognisable cultural figures of postwar Italy, her intellectual work received limited recognition from the institutions that relied upon it. Tracing this gap between visibility and professional legitimacy, the book considers its structural and gendered dimensions and reconstructs the strategies through which Pivano built authority without institutional support. Romanzi introduces the concept of the extended translator: a practice reaching beyond translation into literary scouting, rights negotiation, editorial advocacy, and promotion. Close analysis of Pivano's collaboration with Allen Ginsberg and of the censorship negotiations with Mondadori shows how translation became a site of contested authorship and cultural power. This is a study of how translation, collaboration, and publishing practice intersect to produce cultural change.
