Produktbeschreibung

This Open Access book asks a simple but unsettling question: if we know that seven of the nine planetary boundaries that keep Earth habitable have already been breached, and if nearly three trillion dollars each year continue to flow into military systems while the planet’s life-support systems deteriorate, why are we unable to change course? Its answer is that the obstacle is neither a lack of information nor a failure of political will. It is an operating system. For more than five centuries, the Doctrine of Discovery—the 1493 papal principle that lands beyond Christian sovereignty were available for possession—has quietly shaped the institutions of modernity. Beneath science, markets, and democracy it installed three governing assumptions: that some humans stand above nature and others, that what is not owned belongs to no one, and that growth has no limit. A civilization capable of organizing immense power yet incapable of orienting itself toward the long future is the predictable result. The book argues that the same operating system underlies both ecological breakdown and democratic fragmentation. Nowhere is this more visible than in the United States, where the federal architecture of the Haudenosaunee Great Law of Peace helped inspire constitutional design, while its deeper principles were left behind: the representation of nature in collective decision-making, the authority of Clan Mothers to constrain power, and the obligation to act with regard for the seventh generation yet to come. Long before Hobbes claimed that cooperation without coercion was impossible, Deganawida the Peacemaker had already demonstrated a different possibility—a durable political order without a sovereign ruling from above. Drawing on that overlooked tradition, this book shows how contemporary institutions can be redesigned around a different logic. It proposes a new operating system, Symweave Praxis, founded on three alternative axioms: stewardship rather than dominion, the commons rather than enclosure, and a seven-generation horizon rather than the next quarterly report. Combining insights from Indigenous governance, game theory, and the institutional framework of Future Design, it offers not a moral appeal but a practical redesign of incentives and decision-making. By learning to inhabit the perspective of 2060 and look back on our choices, we discover that a viable future is not beyond reach—it has simply been obscured by the assumptions of the past.
