Exploring the Applicability of Digital Humanities Tools to Ottoman and Turkish Languages

Computer-aided studies are a relatively new approach to text analysis in literature and language studies. Many computer programs or tools based on stylistic analysis have been produced for various languages, particularly for English, but there are currently none that can perform a comprehensive language and literature analysis on the Turkish language. To develop a program and tools that focus on the Turkish and Ottoman languages and their grammar, it is necessary to learn the algorithms of digital humanities (DH) tools developed on other languages and to determine which of these algorithms are suitable for Turkish and Ottoman. This book will provide the primary source for developing computer tools for Turkish and Ottoman language analysis, laying the foundation for further advancements in this field. In this book, 12 tools based on text and network analysis are examined in terms of their suitability for Turkish and Ottoman. Tests on the tools are evaluated under the headings of Corpus, Visualisation, Word Count, N-Grams, Structure Analysis, Network Analysis, and Labelling. The data obtained is evaluated in terms of the suitability of the algorithms of the tools, and suggestions are made for the algorithms that seem suitable for the Turkish and Ottoman language and literature analysis tool or tools to be developed in the future. This study may therefore be of interest to scientists from Turkology departments, researchers who study language structures, and DH and IT professionals who develop computerised language analysis tools.
