Mapping Hungarian Migration in the 1920s

The end of the Great War and the changing (and often interconnected) migration policies in the United States, Canada, and Hungary in the early 1920s resulted in a major restructuring of Hungarian trajectories, redirecting migration towards, within, and across Canada. Many of those arriving established strong communities – some of which still flourish one hundred years later –, while others looked at Canada as a “surrogate United States” or a transit country on the way to the southern neighbor, exploring opportunities for both legal and unauthorized forms of migration. Mapping Hungarian Migration in the 1920s examines heretofore un(der)explored topics in this often overlooked period between 1924 – the introduction of the immigration quotas by the Johnson-Reed Act – and the onset of the Great Depression. Although focusing only on a few years, the book offers insights into a multitude of subjects, among them the global impact of US immigration policy in the 1920s, the influence of migration promotion and discouragement, unauthorized migration at the US-Canada border, the role of intermediaries and migrant agency, and the rise and legacy of the Hungarian diaspora in Montreal with its key organizations presented both in the book and the related online mapping platform.
