Gregor von Zypern und die byzantinische Filioque-Kontroverse

Die Filioque-Kontroverse zwischen Rom und Byzanz war mit den Ereignissen des Jahres 1054 mitnichten abgeschlossen, sondern dauerte als facettenreicher pneumatologischer Diskurs an. Im 12./13. Jh. wurden Panoplien, Traktate, Irrtumslisten und weitere polemische Genres hervorgebracht. Einen vorläufigen Höhepunkt erfuhren diese Debatten in den Folgejahren der kurzlebigen Union von Lyon (1274). Etliche Byzantiner lehnten die lateinische Pneumatologie vehement ab, ohne sich auf einen einheitlichen Gegenentwurf zu verständigen. Fortan wurde die Filioque-Kontroverse in einen primär innerbyzantinischen Diskurs überführt, der im Kontext pneumatologischer Fragestellungen über Geschichtsdeutungen, Traditionshermeneutik und das byzantinische Selbstverständnis schlechthin stritt. Vor diesem Hintergrund entstand der pneumatologische Entwurf des Patriarchen Gregor II. von Zypern (1283–1289). Sein synodaler Tomus (1285) gab mithilfe traditioneller Väterzitate Antworten auf die theologischen Herausforderungen seiner Zeit. Gregor begegnete dem lateinischen Filioque nicht allein mit einem Widerspruch, sondern einem positiven Gegenentwurf. Dieser erfährt in den ökumenischen Gesprächen zunehmend Beachtung und wird in der vorliegenden Studie detailliert dargestellt, eingeordnet und diskutiert.
The filioque controversy between Rome and Byzantium was by far not concluded with the events of 1054, but continued as a multi-faceted pneumatological discourse. In the 12th/13th century, panoplies, treatises, lists of errors and other polemical genres were produced. These debates reached a temporary climax in the years following the ephemeral Union of Lyon (1274). Numerous Byzantines vehemently rejected Latin pneumatology without agreeing on a unified counter-proposal. From then on, the Filioque controversy was channelled into a primarily internal Byzantine discourse, which, in the context of pneumatological questions, argued over interpretations of history, hermeneutics of tradition and the Byzantine self-image per se. The pneumatological design of Patriarch Gregory II of Cyprus (1283-1289) emerged in this context. His synodal Tomus (1285) provided answers to the theological challenges of his time with the help of traditional quotations from the Fathers. Gregory confronted the Latin filioque not only with a contradiction, but also with a positive counter-proposal. The latter is receiving increasing attention in ecumenical discussions and is presented, analysed and discussed in detail in this study.
