Produktbeschreibung
The volume contains, in 590 catalogue articles, an edition of the inscriptions produced between the thirteenth century and the year 1650 in the district of Wolfenbüttel and the city of Salzgitter, which historically formed a coherent territory in southeastern Lower Saxony. The central part of the corpus consists of inscriptions from the milieu of the Wolfenbüttel court, which was of considerable importance in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In addition to the major buildings of the early modern residence—the palace, the arsenal, and above all the principal church of Beatae Mariae Virginis—the largest part of the corpus is made up of memorial inscriptions commemorating the Dukes of Brunswick and Lüneburg and their court officials. An outstanding medieval corpus is provided by the inscriptions on the textiles from the Augustinian convent for women of Heiningen, which are presented here in a new edition. The large-format, richly inscribed tapestries are now held, among other places, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Moravská galerie in Brno (Czech Republic). Taken together with the other inscriptions preserved at Heiningen, their exceptional and complex texts and images provide important source material for the history of religious devotion and education in a women’s convent in the northern Harz foreland. Another important site for inscriptions is the town of Hornburg, with its large number of surviving inscriptions on half-timbered houses. The texts, predominantly taken from the Bible, convey a vivid impression of the impact of the Reformation. This unique corpus of house inscriptions is complemented by the inscriptions on the magnificent funerary monuments and furnishings of the large Protestant parish church in Hornburg, completed in 1616. Its ensemble of inscriptions demonstrates the extent to which the educational efforts of Luther and Melanchthon contributed to a Latin culture of self-representation among the urban bourgeoisie. In addition, inscriptions from more than 100 village churches and rural aristocratic residences are made available to historical scholarship, in many cases for the first time. The introduction to the volume establishes connections between the corpus of inscriptions and the history of the area under study and evaluates the edited material from various historical perspectives. The textual section that follows presents the inscriptions with their abbreviations expanded. Latin and Low German texts are translated. Extensive research into the sources underlying the inscriptions reveals which texts were known to their authors. The descriptions of the objects bearing the inscriptions provide an impression of their material and iconographic contexts and illustrate the unusual ways by which the objects came to reach their present locations. An extensive section of illustrations, including a substantial number of colour plates, complements the edition, which is made accessible through a range of indices.
