Vormoderne Organisationen

Im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes stehen zwei scheinbar einfache Fragen: Gab es in der Vormoderne Organisationen, und wenn ja, was machte sie zu »vormodernen« Organisationen? Formale Organisationen mit der Trennung von Amt und Person, klaren Hierarchien, Mitgliedschaftsrollen und schriftlich fixierten Regeln gelten gemeinhin als Kennzeichen der modernen »Organisationsgesellschaft«. Im Kontrast dazu werden Korporationen wie Zünfte und Bruderschaften häufig als idealtypische Sozialformationen einer ständisch-stratifizierten Gesellschaft beschrieben. Der Band stellt dieses Deutungsmuster zur Disposition und fragt systematisch nach dem Verhältnis von Vormoderne und formaler Organisation, nach ihren Ausprägungen in unterschiedlichen gesellschaftlichen Feldern sowie nach alternativen Langzeitperspektiven jenseits linearer Modernisierungsnarrative. Ziel des Bandes ist es, aktuelle Forschungen zu bündeln und neue Zugänge zur historischen Organisationsforschung zu eröffnen.
»Premodern Organisations: Origins, Functions, Consequences«: The volume studies the relationship between formal organisations and premodernity. In contrast to sociological theories that typically negate the existence of organisations before the 19th century, the contributions explore the possibility of organisations in social and economic relations, in law and politics, and in religious history. As a whole, the volume ties together recent research at the intersection of premodern history and sociological analysis, breaking new pathways for the study of history and historical sociology.
