The Berlin Cathedral

Berlin Cathedral is one of Germany’s most impressive church buildings and a defining landmark of the capital. Commissioned by Emperor Wilhelm II. as the court and cathedral church of the Hohenzollern dynasty, the monumental structure was ceremonially inaugurated on February 27, 1905. With its vast dome, richly articulated façade, and elaborate sculptural program, the cathedral embodies the imperial ambitions of Neo-Baroque architecture. The interior is equally magnificent, featuring a lavish chancel, large-scale mosaic decorations, numerous statues and sculptures, and the Hohenzollern Crypt, one of Europe’s most important dynastic burial sites. Architecture, art, and political symbolism merge here into a powerful Gesamtkunstwerk . Richly illustrated with new photographs, this art guide offers an accessible and well-founded introduction to the history, architecture, and furnishings of Berlin Cathedral. It provides readers with a deeper understanding of one of Germany’s most significant architectural monuments and the former “church of the emperor.” Art guide to Berlin Cathedral, covering history, architecture, and interior Illustrated with new photographs of exterior, interior, and artworks Insight into Neo-Baroque architecture and the former “church of the emperor”
